The rediscovery in the 18th century of the buried cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii gave rise to a taste for antiquity which nourished the arts for a long time and attracted artists and aristocrats to Italy for several centuries.
A sort of initiatory journey, this "Grand Tour" spread throughout the whole of Europe an aesthetic which completely renewed the decorative repertoire.
